Screening Report: Fantastic Mr. Fox

Disclaimer: If you read this, it may spoil the movie for you. The scene I picked is the most critical scene in the movie. I highly recommend watching the movie before reading this.

In the movie “Fantastic Mr Fox”, there is a scene one hour and ten minutes in where Mr. Fox, Christopherson, Kylie, and Ash are having their final standoff with the Three B’s. After freeing Christopherson from the clutches of Mr. Bean, they attempt to break free. Dramatic music starts playing. Clouds go dark, thunder rolls, and Mr. Fox makes a speech. Beans shouts the command and gunfire blazes. With our four heroes are cowering from gunfire, Ash makes a karate reference out of the blue and dashes off. Gunfire exploding around him, he hurdles crates, sliding under obstacles, and in a final feat of athleticism, shatters a locked door freeing the rabid beagle to terrorize the B’s. All this time, his father is calling out the moves and plays from a school game called “Hot Box”.  Finally, Mr. Fox calls Ash an athlete and gives him the bandit hat he’s cherished all those years.

Throughout the film, Ash tries time and time again to impress his father. Whether he’s diving from high branches or struggling through school, the constant need for approval strives. This scene is important due to the transformation Ash takes from awkward child, striving to prove himself to his father, into a strong and independent athlete.

Finally, Along with this, the release of the beagle allows for the group of heroes to escape unharmed. Finally proving that man cannot conquer nature and signaling that they have finally won. The three B’s give up and life moves on.

Journal #2 - Science Fiction

Science fiction has always been a staple of the film industry. By making us think outside the box, this genre allows the viewer to live anywhere - and anywhen - they choose. Whether defending the Earth from invading aliens (Men In Black) or traveling anywhere in the galaxy (Doctor Who), science fiction creates a whole new world full of impossibilities and adventure.

Science fiction also plays a major role in people's lives. Unlike most genres, Science Fiction has a major following. Shows like Star Trek, Firefly, and Star Wars have almost cult-like fans. Dressing in costumes, going to conventions, and acting like their idols, people are able to briefly live in the world they worship.
